Officers from the St. Matthew’s Neighbourhood Team carried out a knife arch operation in Walsall town centre recently, targeting a location known for anti-social behavior. The initiative took place in an alleyway near St. Paul’s bus station, an area previously affected by youth-related disturbances during school holidays.
During the operation, officers engaged with commuters and shoppers, addressing their concerns and sharing information about the risks associated with knife possession. The event also saw police responding to a separate incident involving a man causing a disturbance on a bus. The individual was arrested for drunk and disorderly behavior and possession of cannabis. Additionally, a teenage boy stopped and searched in the alleyway was found with a quantity of cannabis.

The portable knife arch, used as part of the operation, serves as a visible deterrent and enhances the chances of detecting weapons. This equipment was funded through the West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner’s Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA) initiative, which repurposes money confiscated from offenders to support community safety measures.
PC Courtney Tongue, who led the operation, said: “We’re addressing community concerns about anti-social behaviour and crime in the town centre, especially during the school holidays. Knife crime is a serious issue, and we’re committed to taking action to protect our community. We won’t tolerate anti-social behaviour or the carrying of weapons.”
